Coyote Sighting in Kings Park

Coyotes have been seen in and around the trails to Lake Accotink; Kings Park West has had a number of sightings as well. Now there has been a coyote seen in the stream that runs behind the homes on Thames Street. The Wheeler family, while walking their dogs near the corner of Thames and Southampton on July 13, encountered a coyote guarding a deer carcass.

According to information on Fairfax County's website, coyotes are not interested in engaging humans, but there are common sense steps you should take if you encounter one. For information on what to do if you encounter a coyote, see http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/resources/archives/coyotes.htm. For information on how to recognize a coyote, see http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/living/animals/wildlife/species/coyote.htm.

We'd like to keep track of any future coyote sightings. If you see one, please email Olga Wheeler at huskyhokie@yahoo.com and Kayleen Fitzgerald at briankayleen@aol.com
