Loss of Lanes on Braddock Road Overpass During HOT Lanes Construction

Beginning in February 2009 and extending for a period of one year or longer, the Braddock Road overpass at the I-495 interchange will be reduced from 3 lanes in each direction to 2 lanes in each direction. This change essentially removes the beltway entrance/exit lane on the overpass that had been dedicated to merging traffic on/off the two Braddock through lanes for each direction.

To allow for the lane loss, VDOT is using traffic signals to control beltway traffic bound for the overpass (i.e. inner loop ramping off to westbound Braddock and outer loop ramping off to eastbound Braddock). While VDOT makes no recommendations for alternate routes, Kings Park residents may wish to consider beltway access via other points (Little River Turnpike and/or the Springfield "mixing bowl" interchange, among other possible routes) during busy traffic times.

For more official information from VDOT, visit the VDOT Megaprojects site and/or VDOT's January 2009 update on the Braddock Interchange.
