The Fairfax County Commission for Women is collecting cell phones to help domestic violence victims from October through December. The proceeds collected from the drive will benefit the Fairfax County domestic violence shelter.

The effort was launched as part of the county's recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The county's Commission for Women is conducting the drive in partnership with Verizon Wireless' HopeLine Program, which collects used wireless phones and equipment and refurbishes or recycles them for resale. The funds raised are then contributed to nonprofit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country. Victims of domestic violence also receive donated phones and airtime through this program. http://aboutus.vzw.com/communityservice/hopeLine.html

BRADDOCK DISTRICT COMMITTEE
Meeting Minutes for November

The following excerpts from the November Braddock District Committee Meeting are relevant to Kings Park Community.

  • 1. Braddock Road Beautification Trees are being planted. Pending KPCA Board approval, a donation from the KPCA will be accepted by the County.

  • 2. Mary Read Memorial - Maintenance is adequately funded at present.

  • 3. The Tysons Land Use Task Force findings found that the number of residents in the Tysons area has decrease to fewer than 17,000 individuals while the car traffic has greatly increased. The Task Force also found it not easy to live in the area of Tysons Corner and an area in which it is difficult to walk. The Task Force identified this as an immediate problem in need of a solution.

In addition, there are environmental problems, i.e., pollution and congestion issues. There are approximately 110,000 employees that commute daily to the area - thus augmenting the already crowded conditions.

The Task force has held about 20 meetings that included local residents and interested county residents, and has released a draft report with dozens of recommendations.
Check the Fairfax County website for the recommendations.

  • 4. A proposed purchase of a consolidated Administration Building in Merrifield for the Fairfax County Schools System was discussed. The proposal allows the School System to consolidate administrative functions into one building and showing an economies of scale that promises a savings in purchase price due to the currently depressed real estate market.

Even though the County is preparing for a significant revenue shortfall for 2010, the purchase is being encouraged by members of the Board since the Fairfax County AAA bond rating ensures favorable rates for borrowing. The proposal is available on the Fairfax County website.
