[edit] Plea for Volunteers for Lake Braddock Medical Reserve Corps teams
Hi, all -- I met with Jim McLellan, the Unit Coordinator for the Lake Braddock unit of the Fairfax Medical Reserve Corps recently. As I think you know, the FMRC is tasked with responding to serious medical emergencies, such as an outbreak of pandemic flu, or an anthrax attack, and uses the county high schools as centers. These are staffed by volunteers -- only 30% medical, the rest to handle traffic and logistics and ensure the process goes smoothly. Jim says that of the two teams designated to pull 12-hour shifts, one is 60% staffed, and the other (the one I am on) only 17%. He asked that we call for volunteers since, as a nearby community, Kings Park could respond rapidly. Volunteers receive a brief orientation, and take training in class or on-line for their responsibilities. The training is generally useful for emergency response. Volunteers and their families receive inoculations in advance of the general public, and this is another small incentive. Here's what Jim would like posted on the website and in the newsletter --

[edit] CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
As many of you may be aware, Lake Braddock Secondary School has been designated as one of several locations that will function as a Medical Dispensing Site in the event of a terrorist attack with a "treatable" chemical/biological agent (such as anthrax), or the outbreak of a communicable disease (such as the Bird Flu). The over 1.2 million residents of Fairfax County will be instructed to report to specific dispensing locations for treatment in the event of such an occurrence. This is where we need your assistance.
Fairfax County's Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is made up of citizen volunteers who will play a vital role in conjunction with Law Enforcement and Country Disaster agencies in responding to a crisis. There are dozens of positions that need willing and dedicated volunteers to fill mission critical positions. Positions include medical, medical support, transportation, crowd control, data entry, interpreters, logistics and command leadership responsibilities.
The Lake Braddock site is in need of additional volunteers willing to commit to training and assignment to a Team. We can't efficiently respond without your support. The MRC website link further details the positions available and the application process. Please take a moment to consider how you can best serve your community.
The steps are simple. Apply on line to the MRC. Complete the training course relevant to your assigned position. Participate in annual exercises. And in the event of a national crisis, be a first line responder within your community here at Lake Braddock.
Today's world is a dangerous and volatile one. Become a part of the solution. On behalf of Fairfax County, I thank you in advance for your involvement.

Here is the link to a source for FREE brochures on emergency planning for families and businesses. Rather than re-invent the wheel, it seems sensible to use this material for our purposes. Please take a look at it, and at the rest of the site, when you have a chance.
