Dam Repairs to Cause Temporary Closure of Park Trail

A portion of the 3.8-mile loop trail at Lake Accotink Park in Springfield, VA will be temporarily closed in the coming weeks as a project to repair the park’s aging dam begins. Due to safety concerns, the fair-weather crossing near the dam at trail marker three will be closed to thru traffic for several days up to three times between late-August and December. To lessen the impact on visitors to the park, the trail will remain open on Fridays and weekends. The exact dates of the trail closures will be posted on signs along the trail. The Cross County Trail (CCT) will not be affected. read more >

Book Club

The next book club meeting will be Tuesday, September 29th at 7:30 PM at Lucy Daris’ home. The new book being discussed is “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson. Please feel free to drop by and listen or read the book and join in the discussion - all are welcome! Call 703.978.1072 for details.

Bridge Club

The bridge club is up and running! Currently we play every other Thursday during the midday hours, but are more than willing to consider alternate times and days. We play for fun and the great social benefit of getting together. Anyone of any skill level will always be welcome - even if you just want to watch and enjoy the banter. Please contact Roberta (Bobby) Jones at 703.978.0199.

Weekly Walking Group

Meet your neighbors, exercise and see the Kings Park and Lake Accotink sites. Deb Discenza, our new Recreation Chair, is excited to start-up a new "Sunday Walking Group" in the Kings Park neighborhood beginning in September. The goal is attempting to walk early (around 7-7:30 a.m.) every Sunday. On decent weather days the goal will be to meet up at the Danbury Forest entrance to Lake Accotink Park and do a full loop of the park to take in the lovely scenery year round. On days where the lake paths might be muddy, or just for a change of pace, we will be changing to different routes around the Kings Park Neighborhood so that we can take in our great development.

Interested? Contact Deb Discenza at ddiscenza@gmail.com for details. Interested, but want a different walking day and/or time? We are open to setting up a secondary group as well, so please contact Deb about this, too.

The Recreation Committee

The Recreation Committee is looking to create a variety of activities that can be shared across our community and we welcome your input. On the table for discussion are:

  • a walking group for Lake Accotink
  • a walking group for taking on different parts of Kings Park each time
  • play dates in the park for children 10 and under as well as other venues in the local area
  • frisbee and horseshoe games
  • volleyball games
  • bike riding
  • and more!

  • For anyone interested in volunteering to help in one or more of these areas, please contact Deb Discenza at ddiscenza@gmail.com.
